Thyroid Receptor Antibodies (TRabs)
Graves’s is the autoimmune hyperthyroid condition sustained by autoantibodies binding to and activating the TSH receptor located on the thyroid follicular cell.

An essential marker in serum testing to understand how and why a thyroid may be malfunctioning. TSH receptor antibodies (TRab) are generally regarded as mediators of thyroid stimulation in Graves’ disease. Positive TRab have been detected in 80% of newly diagnosed Graves’ patients.

The diagnosis of Graves’ hyperthyroidism is based upon clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory tests confirming the presence of thyrotoxicosis, such as diffuse goiter, ophthalmopathy, positive thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and less commonly thyroglobulin (Tg) antibodies, and finally, positive serum TSH receptor antibodies (TRab).

A high serum TRAb value during pregnancy is one of the risk factors for intrauterine death, prematurity, and fetal or neonatal hyperthyroidism.
